Dear Friends,
I’m so excited to announce that through the generosity of Deeanne Hunstein we will be exhibiting some of her husband’s, the late great Don Hunstein’s photos during our Black
History Month Concert. As many of you know, Don was the in house photographer for over 30 years for Columbia Masterworks during the Golden Years. Not only did Don shoot the album covers of some of the greatest artists ever, he also photographed the recording sessions. From Miles Davis, to Billy Holiday, Bernstein, Stravinsky, Horowitz, Dylan, Coltrane, Monk, Streisand and more. Don’s photos are moving, storytelling, and iconic. Deeanne will be with us to speak about Don’s relationship with many of the great artists he photographed. Please stop by early so you can enjoy these incredible photos!
Thank you,
Nadine

Hope to see you there as we learn about one of the great African American Women Artists of our time.
Capathia Jenkins can definitely act but all those who know her also know that this diva can blow and blow and blow you right off this planet. This woman who grappling with two dueling passions each with a strong grip: acting and music, yet she refuses to pick one because they both represent her soul. Capathia approaches a song the same way she approaches a script, like an artist. She looks for the nuances, the secret hidden within the notes or text. She seeks the melody, harmony and rhythm. She asks herself: what am I trying to say? What do I want my audience to experience with me? She wants to take her audience on a journey.

More about Healing Through the Arts:
The NSA proposes the first “Healing through the Arts” event that brings together women and children from different cultural backgrounds. The themes of this event would center around healthier communications, empathy, togetherness, anxiety, stress, depression, mental/emotional health, postpartum depression, and other issues through the process of participating in art making. We hope to break the stigma that depression and mental health needs still carry in our society. The main goal of the event is to provide technical instruction on various arts techniques, and how to apply these skills to manage daily pressures and depressive symptoms.
Through an afternoon of engagement with professional Artists, Social Workers, and Health educators the community will have the opportunity to share, learn, and express how they feel, and realize the next actions needed to overcome unconscious past or present traumas, and open new doors to better quality of life.
Thus, "Healing Through the Arts” is a place where the community feels supported, safe, and can learn new skills, learn how to understand their own feelings, thoughts, and actions to provide a healthy environment for themselves, their children, and significant others.
In the next 10 years, “Healing through the Arts” will be not just an event, but a place where the community, young children, adolescents, adults, and seniors can reach out for support, guidance, and resources to help face daily adversities.
